Instituto de SociologíaEl empleo suele ser considerado como una puerta de salida de la pobreza. Esta concepción de la participación laboral como factor reductor de la pobreza ha sido muy influyente en la discusión académica y de políticas públicas, tanto a nivel internacional como nacional. Sin embargo, los estudios sobre pobreza laboral han evidenciado que individuos con trabajos remunerados también pueden experimentar severas carencias en sus condiciones de vida. Los estudios sobre pobreza laboral en Chile son recientes y poco numerosos, estando principalmente orientados hacia la construcción de estimaciones de la cantidad de trabajadores pobres, como también, a la descripción de sus características asociadas (Bennett, 2017; Durán y Kremerman, 2015; Maldonado, Prieto, y Feres, 2018; Sehnbruch, 2006). Sin embargo, no se sabe mucho sobre la evolución de la pobreza laboral durante las últimas tres décadas, y sus factores asociados. Considerando esta brecha de conocimiento, en el presente estudio indagué cómo ha cambiado la probabilidad de ser un trabajador pobre en Chile entre 1990 y 2017, analizando datos transversales repetidos provenientes de la serie de Encuestas Casen, con un enfoque Edad-Periodo-Cohorte (EPC). Los principales hallazgos de este estudio muestran que existe un efecto periodo negativo y pronunciado, cuando se adopta una estrategia de medición absoluta y relativa anclada de la pobreza laboral. Sin embargo, desde una aproximación relativa, constaté un efecto periodo positivo. Además, observé un efecto edad negativo y efectos cohorte significativos. Las cohortes más jóvenes no son las que presentan un menor riesgo de pobreza laboral, sino que, por el contrario, exhiben una mayor probabilidad de experimentarla que sus antecesoras inmediatas. La juventud es el momento del ciclo vital donde las personas están más expuestas a este fenómeno. Junto con ello, demuestro que la estimación de los efectos EPC sobre pobreza laboral es sensible a la estrategia de medición adoptada.
