- ItemBeyond Nintendo: design and assessment of educational video games for first and second grade students(PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 2003) Rosas, R; Nussbaum, M; Cumsille, P; Marianov, V; Correa, M; Flores, P; Grau, V; Lagos, F; Lopez, X; Lopez, V; Rodriguez, P; Salinas, MThe main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the introduction of educational videogames into the classroom, on, learning, motivation, and classroom dynamics. These effects were studied using a sample of 1274 students from economically disadvantaged schools in Chile. The videogames were specifically designed to address the educational goals of the first and second years of school, for basic mathematics and reading comprehension. The sample was divided into experimental groups (EG), internal control groups (IC) and external control groups (EC). Students in the EG groups, used the experimental video games during an average of 30 h over a 3-month period. They were evaluated on their acquisition of reading comprehension, spelling, and mathematical skills, and on their motivation to use video games. Teachers' expectations of change due to the use of video games, their technological transfer, and handling of classroom dynamics, were assessed through ad hoc tests and classroom observations. The results show significant differences between the EG and IC groups in relation to the EC group in Math, Reading Comprehension and Spelling, but no significant differences in these aspects were found between the EG and the IC groups. Teacher reports and classroom observations confirm an improvement in motivation to learn, and a positive technological transfer of the experimental tool. Although further studies regarding the effects of learning through videogame use are imperative, positive effects on motivation and classroom dynamics, indicate that the introduction of educational video games can be a useful tool in promoting learning within the classroom. - ItemConsumption of tobacco in people aged under 18 year: Prevalence study in students in Chile (vol 132, pg 171, 2004)(SOC MEDICA SANTIAGO, 2004) Valdivia, G; Simonetti, F; Cumsille, P; Ramirez, V; Hidalgo, CG; Palma, B; Carrasco, J
- ItemEvaluation of the efficiency of a support program for adolescent mothers(REV LATINOAMERICANA PSICOLOGIA, 1997) Ramirez, V; Cumsille, PThe evaluation of the efficiency of a support program for adolescent mothers, and their children, is presented. Participants belonged to low socio-economic levels, from Santiago (Chile). The program is based on agents from the community denominated monitors-who carry out the work with the mothers and their children. Information tests were applied, and the group work of the 32 monitors were observed. Interviews were carried out in all the levels of the program, including the 15 adolescent mothers participants. Results indicate that the service of the program had good quality, with strenghts and weakness. Monitors of the mothers were better than the monitors of the children, in theoretical aspects and in the managing of their respective groups. The operation conditions of the program were positive. The adolescent mothers report satisfaction with the program. Suggestions are presented in order to solve the problems usually faced in the implementation of community programs.
- ItemExploring adolescent self-defining leisure activities and identity experiences across three countries(SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD, 2005) Coatsworth, JD; Sharp, EH; Palen, LA; Darling, N; Cumsille, P; Marta, EThe developmental processes of identity exploration and formation in adolescence often take place within the context of leisure activities. The discovery model of identity formation proposes that these processes are reflected in part by adolescents' subjective identity-related experiences including personal expressiveness, flow, and goal-directed behaviour (Waterman, 1990, 1993). This model, however, has not been tested with cross-national samples. The purpose of this study was to examine the applicability of this general model of identity-related experiences within self-defining activities for a sample of 493 adolescents from the United States, Chile, and Italy. Confirmatory analyses of a three-factor model showed strong invariance across countries. Findings indicated that most adolescents reported high levels of identity experiences within self-defining activities. Results from Multivariate Analyses of Variance indicated considerable commonalities and a few significant differences in these experiences across the three countries and across five broad activity classes. Findings are discussed in the context of the growing literature on adolescent activity involvement and the relation of activities to identity exploration.
- ItemSibling differentiation: Sibling and parent relationship trajectories in adolescence(WILEY, 2003) Feinberg, ME; McHale, SM; Crouter, AC; Cumsille, PStudied here were the links between sibling differences in trajectories of change in the qualities of parent-child relationships and the qualities of sibling relationships across a 2-year period in adolescence. Participants were first- and second-born siblings (M age = 14.94 years for firstborns and M age = 12.46 years for secondborns) from 185 predominantly White, working and middle-class families. In home interviews, siblings reported on their dyadic family relationships. For reports of parent-child warmth but not parent-child conflict, results were consistent with sibling differentiation theory: Increasing differences between siblings over time in parent-child warmth were linked to trajectories of increasing warmth and decreasing conflict in the sibling relationship as reported by firstborns, and increasing warmth in the sibling relationship as reported by secondborns. The findings support the view that sibling differentiation may be a strategy for managing sibling conflict and rivalry.
- ItemSmoking habit in school age children, in Chile(SOC MEDICA SANTIAGO, 2004) Valdivia, G; Simonetti, F; Cumsille, P; Ramirez, V; Hidalgo, CG; Palma, B; Carrasco, JBackground: In Chile, there is no information about the prevalence of smoking among basic and high school students. Aim: To study the prevalence of smoking among school age population.
- ItemTheory, measurement, and methods in the study of family influences on adolescent smoking(WILEY, 2003) Darling, N; Cumsille, PThis paper discusses three dilemmas faced by researchers interested in family influences in substance use: the transitional nature of adolescent smoking, the complexity and multi-dimensionality of family forms and influences, and the inter-relationship of family influences with other key developmental contexts. Methodological and conceptual issues stemming from these dilemmas are discussed with regard to understanding why previous reviews have found the correlations between family predictors and adolescent smoking to be relatively low. In particular, the importance of understanding time, the transitional nature of the phenomenon, and within- and between- family processes are emphasized. More appropriate Conceptual and statistical models for analyzing family influences are suggested. including both mixed models and person-centered approaches.
