    Codiseño insurgente durante el estallido social en Santiago de Chile

    A normalized concept like “co-design” might exclude collective practices that deviate from conventional models of producing public spaces. Analyzing spaces spontaneously created during the social outburst in Santiago, Chile, the authors propose the concept of “insurgent codesign” to highlight the relevance of collective practices of memorialization and public space creation, whose form and maintenance rely on multiple hands and anonymous contributors, challenging the primacy of authorship in design.

    Designing and worlding: prototyping equivocal encounters

    To sustainably coexist with other ontologies, human beings must overcome the perception of being the center of the world. This article describes how a video log refuted the initial – anthropocentric – hypothesis explaining the breakdown of an experiment with Judy and Gombe, chimpanzees that inhabit the National Zoo of Chile. This shows that it is wrong to ascribe human affects and reactions to other ontologies, and also that there is a long way to go to apprehend, comprehend, and sustainable coexist with other ontologies in more-than-human ecosystems.

    Designing for Posthuman Legalities: Legal Design(ing) and the Ontological Turn

    Designing for posthuman legalities explores ways of projecting new human-nature-technology relations within the frame of legal rights. We do so, addressingthe problematic notions of human, nature, and technologies – all three of whichare hallmarks of modernity. In times of a global climate crisis and accelerated digitalisation, the legal system needs to shift the human-centred paradigm to considerother ontologies that account for our posthuman condition. Problematising thecurrent human-centred design practices, this paper explores other ways of designing beyond the Anthropocentric worldview. This demands a reworking, on both theepistemic and ontological levels —ways of knowing and ways of being— of the design part as much as the legal part. Against this context, we explore the designingof the rights of nature and the rights of machines. We elaborate five propositionsregarding ways of designing for the posthuman in the realm of law and justice. Thepropositions are 1) prototyping as a way of disclosing worlds, 2) posthuman legalities as trans-ontological liminality, 3) from explanations to describing, performing, and becoming, 4) posthuman solicitations, affectivity, and attunement, and 5)posthuman co-incidences, resonances, and frictions. At the end of each one of thepropositions we share experiences from our projects on designing for the posthuman. The propositions are not meant to be a checklist, but to provide possibilitiesfor action to the reader. Thus, fellow researchers and practitioners will find in thispaper a rich conceptual reference, as well as strategies to explore and disclose other worlds. It will also serve as an invitation and encouragement to delve into thecomplexities of the emergent posthuman legalities.

    Fotoetnografía: emergencia, uso silencioso y tres irrupciones en la tradición estadounidense

    El presente ensayo toma la idea que plantea Allan Sekula en The Traffic in Photographs (1981) de que la fotografía es un campo de juego a la vez que el juego mismo entre dos fuerzas en disputa. El enfrentamiento de las fuerzas culturales que impulsaron su origen, desarrollo y marcaron su carácter. A saber, la ciencia burguesa y el arte burgués, constituye su propia historia e impone condiciones para la producción de fotografías. Esta idea lleva a emprender una revisión sintética de la relación fotografía-conocimiento, ya que presenta a la fotografía no como una disciplina o tecnología estática y definible de una vez y para siempre, sino como un proceso, es decir como una realidad dinámica y cambiante que interactúa con su contexto para definir sus maneras de operar y explicarse y que, al mismo tiempo, lleva innato el conflicto que le da movimiento, es decir el de arte y ciencia, entendidas como formas de conocer e interpretar el mundo. Muestra como el conflicto que tensiona este juego no solo se hace presente como una fuerza unívoca que, explícita e implícitamente, dirige el ejercicio fotográfico y el consumo de imágenes, sino que aparece en múltiples dimensiones, tanto en la misma invención de la cámara fotográfica,objeto híbrido, nacido de un affaire entre la experimentación científica y los instrumentos destinados a la práctica del arte, como en sus diversas aplicaciones y formas de uso. Para esto se describe brevemente los antecedentes de la cámara fotográfica, para luego presentar y comentar en orden cronológico textos y situaciones. Se finaliza a través de una interpretación de la fotografía desde la teoría crítica y orientada al cambio social.

    Impugnaciones pedagógicas: prototipado interespecies y encuentros cosmopolíticos

    En este artículo analizaremos los desplazamientos epistemológicos experimentados en el Taller deDiseño de Interacción de la Escuela de Diseño de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile durante una intervención realizada durante el primer semestre de 2016 en el Zoológico Nacional de Chile (ZNdC). Primero describimos el proceso de transformación de las prácticas pedagógicas suscitadas en la Escuela de Diseño a comienzos del siglo XXI y la adopción del giro etnográfico; luego, exhibimos cómo la intervención en el ZNdC devino en una impugnación de los marcos epistemológicos y metodológicos del user-centered design y del problem-solving design. A través de la noción de “encuentros cosmopolíticos” —inspirada en el trabajo de la filósofa Isabelle Stengers y en la experiencia interespecie suscitada en el ZNdC— concluimos que el prototipado es una herramienta pedagógica que permite poner en duda epistemologías y métodos hegemónicos, alentando la posibilidad de desarrollar un “diseño cosmopolítico”.

    Interspecies Design for Co-Existence

    Modern design has been pivotal in the capitalist system’s expansion. This involvement has sculpted the ontological, epistemological, and methodological foundations of designing. Hence, the critical question arises: How might we navigate beyond the anthropocentric maraña through design? Echoing Latour, how do we shift from designing as humans in the Holocene to crafting as earthbounders in the Anthropocene? To assume the role of earthbound designers, we are called to conceptualize categories for imagining and crafting worlds. As designers, we harness the potential to spearhead this transformation through critical creation and experimentation, fostering creative experiences that design modes conducive to the well-being of vibrant bodies and communities. In this chapter, we shall explore three more-than-human encounters, the attributes, and the relational conditions that pave the way for envisioning and making pragmatic agreements for inter-species coexistence. As design researchers, we perceive these encounters as more-than-human prototyping – moments of cosmopolitical diplomacy that might unveil keys to crafting worlds that embody Buen Vivir (sumak kawsay).

    Intervenciones Insurgentes en la revuelta social en la Plaza de la Dignidad

    Considerando la complejidad de la revuelta social en Chile y sus expresiones visuales en el espacio público, en el presente trabajo analizamos un material fotoetnográfico producido en el entorno de la Plaza de la Dignidad desde la noción de Maraña, de modo de dar cuenta de dicha complejidad y de las dimensiones que se expresan en ella bajo una modalidad insurgente de transformación del espacio público y de interpelación a las formas tradicionales de interpretar y comprender el fenómeno.
