- ItemAssociation Between Airway Caliber Changes With Lung inflation and Emphysema Assessed by Volumetric CT Scan in Subjects With COPD(2012) Diaz, Alejandro A.; Come, Carolyn E.; Ross, James C.; Estepar, Raul San Jose; Han, MeiLan K.; Loring, Stephen H.; Silverman, Edwin K.; Washko, George R.Background: An increase in airway caliber (airway distensibility) with lung inflation is attenuated in COPD. Furthermore, some subjects have a decrease in airway caliber with lung inflation. We aimed to test the hypothesis that airway caliber increases are lower in subjects with emphysema-predominant (EP) compared with airway-predominant (AP) CT scan subtypes. Additionally, we compared clinical and CT scan features of subjects with (airway constrictors) and without a decrease in airway caliber.
- ItemPhysiological and Computed Tomographic Predictors of Outcome from Lung Volume Reduction Surgery(AMER THORACIC SOC, 2010) Washko, George R.; Martinez, Fernando J.; Hoffman, Eric A.; Loring, Stephen H.; Estepar, Raul San Jose; Diaz, Alejandro A.; Sciurba, Frank C.; Silverman, Edwin K.; Han, MeiLan K.; DeCamp, Malcolm; Reilly, John J.; Natl Emphysema Treatment Trial ResRationale: Previous investigations have identified several potential predictors of outcomes from lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS). A concern regarding these studies has been their small sample size, which may limit generalizability. We therefore sought to examine radiographic and physiologic predictors of surgical outcomes in a large, multicenter clinical investigation, the National Emphysema Treatment Trial.
