- ItemApplications of the integral project management in the construction industry Second part, highway projects(PONTIFICIA UNIV CATOLICA CHILE, ESCUELA CONSTRUCCION CIVIL, 2010) Veas, L.; Pradena, M.This is the third paper of a series about the Integral Project Management (IPM) in the Chilean construction industry, even though many of the concepts included here are extrapolated to the reality of other countries and other productive sectors. The basis of the IPM's proposal in the construction industry was presented by the authors in a previous issue of this journal. In this article important aspects of the IPM application to the particular case of highway projects are presented. Thus, the necessity of deep analysis in this kind of projects is first reviewed, due to the high investments required. Also, the particularities of road projects and the role of PM in this kind of projects are presented. After that, the importance of road maintenance and the necessity of modeling are shown. Finally the applications of IPM are shown both in public and private projects.
- ItemApplications of the Integral Project Management in the Construction Industry. Part One, Real Estate Projects(PONTIFICIA UNIV CATOLICA CHILE, ESCUELA CONSTRUCCION CIVIL, 2009) Veas, L.; Pradena, M.This is the second paper in a series about the Project Management (PM) in the chilean construction industry, even though many of the concepts discharges here are extrapolated to the reality of other countries. The basis of the proposed Project Management in the construction industry was presented by the authors in the previous paper of this magazine. This article presents important aspects of the application of PM to the particularly case of real estate. This will review the current status of the Project Management of real estate projects in Chile, the coordination of real estate projects. Also, presents the life cycle of a building project to show the main aspects which need the PM assistance. The aspects to consider for a client to contract the services of an office of Project Management was presented. Furthermore, an example of how an PM office can offer their services was show. Finally delivered some factors for assessing the design and construction. According to presented it is concluded that the Project Management is necessary and applicable for the proper development of a real estate project.
- ItemHeavy Industrial Asphalt Pavements Design Using Software HIPAVE(PONTIFICIA UNIV CATOLICA CHILE, ESCUELA CONSTRUCCION CIVIL, 2009) Pradena, M.; Valenzuela, M.; Molina, P.This article discus about the heavy industrial asphalt pavements structural design, through the application of a mechanistic approach for the analysis and design. The heavy industrial pavements are principally characterized for its heavy traffic loads and a relative low number of repetitions. The current design practice is based on purely empirical principles, which have been developed for the design of roads asphalt pavements, and are not applicable for the design of heavy industrial pavements. So, this article contain a full study about the empirical - mechanistic design method, applicated on heavy industrial asphalt pavements analysis and design. Every stage of the method are described, and inputs like traffic loads, material properties and temperature distribution are characterized. A description of the software HIPAVE is presented, which is a software from Australia and was developed for heavy industrial asphalt pavements analysis and design. Also, the applicability of the method and the future research lines for to improve itself are discussed. In complement, a application example is presented, which consist in the design of a asphalt pavement structure, for a sawmill's yard located in Arauco province.
- ItemProject management applied to the infrastructure rehabilitation at the Universidad de Concepcion, Chile, following an m8.8 Earthquake(2011) Pradena, M.; Valenzuela, M.Although the buildings of the Universidad de Concepcion (UdeC) stood up well structurally to the effects of the earthquake on 27 February 2010 in Concepcion, Chile, diverse damage was generated in their non-structural elements. Due to the large number of university buildings (over 100 on the Concepcion Campus alone) and the need to start classes on 5 April, numerous simultaneous repair projects were generated. These were done within the national post-earthquake context and the specific context of the UdeC.
- ItemUnpaved roads stabilization and maintenance under ice-snow conditions in mountain areas(PONTIFICIA UNIV CATOLICA CHILE, ESCUELA CONSTRUCCION CIVIL, 2010) Pradena, M.; Mery, J P; Novoa, E.Traffic and climate conditions are well known variables that define the road cycle of life. Some unpaved roads located in mountain areas should be kept open as much as possible throughout the year, since they are part of important industrial works and because of the economical impact its closing could cause. Permanent traffic of heavy-duty vehicles in addition to extreme snow and ice condition increase deterioration of these roads significantly Thus, stabilization processes of the road pavement are performed to reduce the potential damage they will be subject to, achieving in turn effective control on ice and snow. This article focuses on a synthesis and discussion about the use of stabilizing agents in this kind of roads, both in Chile and in other countries.
