    Change Direction: Influencing the National Church through the Vatican during the Pinochet Dictatorship in Chile

    The relations between the Chilean Church and the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) are often characterized as conflictive. After a short period of accommodation and legitimation, the Chilean episcopate started to confront the dictatorship in the name of the poor and persecuted, but never breaking entirely with the regime. This led to a complicated relationship between the Church and the dictatorship, which tried to legitimize authoritarian rule by reference to Christian values and the defense of "Christian civilization". Much historiography has examined this relation from the point of view of the Church. When examined from the point of view of the State important nuances appear. Documents from the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Relations and correspondence with the Chilean ambassador to the Vatican, shed new light on efforts by the Chilean state to shape relations with the Church and to change the position of bishops who were critical of the regime. These data help understand better the dynamics of conflict between Church and State in Chile during the dictatorship.

Analiza así la misma desde la época colonial hasta la actualidad ofreciendo una visión comparativa.

    “El anhelo moderno”. Los debates de corrupción acerca de la ley electoral Sáenz Peña en Argentina en 1912

    El texto analizará la discusión pública acerca de la ley Sáenz Peña en 1912, que cambió drásticamente el régimen electoral en Argentina y se concibe generalmente como el comienzo de la democracia de masas en el país. En este sentido, se analiza de qué manera se usa la acusación de corrupción electoral para justificar o rechazar la ley y cómo se relaciona este discurso con los argumentos de una supuesta modernidad institucional, generado con esta ley. Siguiendo los planteamientos de Jens-Ivo Engels, se leen los debates de corrupción como síntomas de un estado de sociedad, donde se asocia la corrupción con lo antiguo y “barbárico”, mientras se relaciona una sociedad sin corrupción electoral con un camino hacia la modernidad y civilización anheladas. De esta manera, se plantea que, en 1912, se impuso el argumento de la modernización electoral como solución al supuesto atraso civilizatorio, pero que su fracaso erosionó la fe en la democracia de una parte de la elite argentina antes de 1930. Así, se espera poder aportar elementos para el mejor entendimiento de la sociedad argentina del Centenario y de las esperanzas discursivas relacionadas con la ley electoral de 1912, unas esperanzas que, con respecto a la corrupción electoral, se vieron defraudadas enseguida

    Los discursos católicos sobre la fundación de la Acción Católica en Chile y Argentina. Un análisis comparado de "Horizontes de Expectativas" distintos

    En presente artículo analiza de manera comparada los discursos católicos que acompañaron la fundación de la Acción Católica (AC) en 1931 en Chile y Argentina. En ambos países se fundó la AC con metas e ideas parecidas, sin embargo, la historiografía llega a un juicio distinto sobre el rol jugado por esta organización en la década de los ’30, una época de gran importancia para la historia de la Iglesia en ambos países. Por esta razón, se analizarán los discursos católicos sobre la AC con el fin de no solamente ampliar la visión y el entendimiento sobre la organización, sino también indagar en los posibles espacios discursivos que se hayan creado durante su fundación. Pretendemos mostrar que losdiscursos católicos que secundaron la fundación de la AC contuvieron, a pesar de muchas similitudes, ciertos matices y diferencias, que se volvieron importantes para el futuro desarrollo de ambas Iglesias. Estos discursos abrieron distintos “horizontes de expectativas” que pueden explicar, en parte y no como único factor, ciertas actitudes y tendencias diferentes de dos Iglesias vecinas y, en mucho, muy parecidas. Para el análisis nos basamos en fuentes escritas como La Revista Católica y el Boletín de la Acción Católica para Chile, y la Revista Eclesiástica del Arzobispado de Buenos Aires, El Boletín Oficial de la Acción Católica, el Anuario Católico y el Boletín del Asesor de la Acción Católica para Argentina.

    El Patio 29 solía destinarse a la sepultación de indigentes, pacientes psiquiátricos y personas que morían sin ser identificadas (NN). Sin embargo, entre septiembre de 1973 y enero de 1974, sus tumbas se utilizaron para ocultar como NN a víctimas de la represión. Javiera Bustamante y Stephan Ruderer reconstruyen la dolorosa historia del lugar, valiéndose de testimonios de los familiares de detenidos- desaparecidos, cartas, documentos y otras fuentes. El libro da cuenta, igualmente, del arduo proceso de identificación y entrega de los cuerpos, así como de las irregularidades que caracterizaron estas diligencias. Las potentes fotografías que ilustran el volumen fueron realizadas por la artista visual Mara Daruich.

    THE CATHOLIC DISCOURSESABOUTTHE FOUNDATION OFTHE CATHOLICACTION IN CHILE AND ARGENTINA. A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT ?EXPECTATION HORIZONS?

    The present article tries to analyze, in a comparative way, the catholic discourses about the foundation of the Catholic Action in Chile and Argentina in 1931. In both countries, the Catholic Action was founded with similar ideas and purposes, but, as the historiography has shown, has played a different role in the decade of the 1930, which was of great importance for the history of the Catholic Church in Chile and Argentina. For this reason, we will analyze the catholic discourses about the CA not only to better understand the role played by this organization, but also to outline the discursive channels opened during the foundation of CA. We will show that these channels led to different ways of thinking and speaking that will be important for the historic development of the Church in both countries. The discourses about the CA opened different "expectation horizons" in Chile and Argentina, which could explain, at least in part, the different attitudes and tendencies of two neighboring and, in many things, so similar Churches. We base our analysis in written sources, as there are: La Revista Catolica, the Boletin de la Accion Catolica for Chile, and Revista Eclesiastica del Arzobispado de Buenos Aires, El Boletin Oficial de la Accion Catolica, the Anuario Catolico and the Boletin del Asesor de la Accion Catolica for Argentina.

    The Controversies Over Maritain in Chile and Argentina. Precursors of Different Progressive and Conservative Catholicisms

    This work analyzes the controversies over Maritain in Argentina and Chile to read them comparatively, which leads to a medium-term interpretation of these debates as precursors, as trailblazers for different progressive and conservative Catholicisms. These different expressions of Catholicism, forged around the controversies over Maritain, had lasting and profound effects on the historical development of the Catholic Church and its positions on politics in both countries. Thus, our research intends to provide an explanation for both the different expressions of progressive Catholicism, which developed in the two countries in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as the different majority reactions on the part of the Catholic Church during the last military dictatorships in Chile and Argentina. We do not seek to impose a single explanation with this idea, but rather to highlight certain aspects of Catholicism in Argentina and Chile that help to explain the Church's attitude to politics in both countries and which can be seen more clearly in a comparative analysis. In line with Reinhart Koselleck, we argue that the debates on Maritain opened different "expectation horizons" that outlined the possibilities of thinking the political expressions of conservative and progressive Catholicisms in both countries. As medium-term structural factors, these "expectation horizons" help to understand the Catholic Church's reactions to the last military dictatorships in Chile and Argentina.

Auf dem fußballverrückten Kontinent spielte der Sport häufig auf der politischen Bühne mit und schrieb dabei kuriose Geschichten, darunter ein offizielles WM-Qualifikationsspiel ohne Gegner, ein Deutscher als erster brasilianischer Fußballstar, ein angeblicher "Fußballkrieg", ausländische Starspieler während des Bürgerkriegs in Kolumbien oder ein demokratischer Fußballverein in Brasilien zur Zeit der Diktatur.Doch wirklich interessant werden diese Anekdoten erst dann, wenn man versteht, wie häufig sie Ausdruck oder Abbild der historischen und politischen Entwicklung auf dem Kontinent waren. Aus diesem Grund sind die Texte in diesem Buch auch keine reinen "Fußballgeschichten". Sie dienen uns vielmehr dazu, über das Phänomen Fußball einen Zugang zu der vielschichtigen und spannenden Geschichte Lateinamerikas zu eröffnen.
