- ItemHybrid predictive modeling and simulation of the Teniente converter(IEEE, 2009) Schaaf Fritis, Max Alexander; Cipriano, AldoThe principal copper pyrometallurgical technology employed in Chile is the Teniente converter (TC). The smelting and converting processes involve complex dynamics with strong interactions among manipulated variables, state variables, and product characteristics. Furthermore, the converter products are periodically extracted in a semi-continuous process. Previous applications of model predictive control in TC operation have shown good performance. The recent development of an online-sensor for measuring the levels of the liquid phases opens up new possibilities for control of the process. The TC prediction model must accommodate discrete states for the white metal and slag tap holes. When the TC is inclined for maintenance, the injection system is disconnected and slag evacuation may occur via the converter mouth, thus affecting liquid level dynamics. The three possible incline positions or angles determine three discrete states, each one corresponding to a different set of liquid dynamics. Describing these situations therefore requires a hybrid dynamic model. This paper presents a hybrid grey box model for the Teniente converter process that combines continuous and discrete variables to describe six different operating mode.

- ItemSimulation Paper Planes a Way to Teach Lean Production(IEEE, 2020) Salazar Fica, Luis Arturo; Revuelta, M. P.This article contributes to efforts to teach new methodologies for Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management. Therefore, the creation of the Simulation Paper Planes is presented to teach the principles of Lean Production. The document details the basic rules, general instructions, materials, manufacturing drawings, key performance indicators, and rounds of this simulation. This simulation is a direct and straightforward way to explain and demonstrate the importance of applying the Lean Principles in projects and production processes anywhere in the world. Of the 14 Lean principles, the authors managed to get participants to use 11. As future research, the authors call teachers and consultants to apply this simulation to students (Civil, Industrial, and Construction Engineering) and professionals, to generate a more extensive database. Also, they propose a line of research regarding the level of education in Lean practices between different countries, because, in general terms, undergraduate students in Chile were at the level of graduate students in Colombia.
