Abstract
La Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena ha mantenido siempre una situación periférica, en cuanto a su posición geográfica y funcional. Sus atributos topográficos y climáticos handeterminado en gran medida la ocupación del territorio. Muchas veces la división político-administrativa nocorresponde a la organización y estructura sociocultural de las regiones. Es por ello, imperioso conocer suscaracterísticas para comprender a cabalidad su composición, articulación y funcionamiento, con el fin deestablecer modelos capaces de dar cuenta de la verdadera naturaleza de dichos territorios
The Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region has always helda peripheralsituation, accordingwith its geographicaland functional position. Their topographic and climatic attributes have determined, in agreat extent, the occupation of this territory. Often, the political-administrative division does not correspond tothe organization and sociocultural structure of the regions. For that reason, it is urgent to know itscharacteristics for a deep understanding of its composition, articulation and operation, with the purpose ofestablishing models capable to give account of the true nature of these territories.
