- ItemBenchmarking the Covid-19 pandemic across countries and states in the USA under heterogeneous testing(2020) Asahi Kodama, Kenzo Javier; Undurraga Fourcade, Eduardo Andrés; Wagner, Rodrigo; CEDEUS (Chile)Public health officials need to make urgent decisions to reduce the potential impact of the CoVID-19 pandemic. Benchmarking based on the increase in total cases or case fatality rates is one way of comparing performance across countries or territories (such as states in the USA), and could inform policy decisions about COVID-19 mitigation strategies. But comparing cases and fatality across territories is challenging due to heterogeneity in testing and health systems. We show two complementary ways of benchmarking across countries or US states. First, we used multivariate regressions to estimate the test-elasticity-of-COVID-19-case-incidence. We found a 10% increase in testing yielded ~9% (95% CI:4.2–3.4%; p<0.001) increase in reported cases across countries, and ~2% (95%CI:0.1-3.4%; p=0.03) increase across US states during the week ending April 10th, 2020. We found comparable negative elasticities for fatality rates (across countries: β =-0.77, 95%CI:-1.40– -0.14; p=0.02; US states: β=-0.15, 95%CI:-0.30-0.01; p=0.06). Our results were robust to various model specifications. Second, we decomposed the growth in cases into test growth and positive test ratio (PTR) growth to intuitively visualize the components of case growth. We hope these results can help support evidence-based decisions by public health officials as more consistent data hopefully becomes available.

(Resumen ejecutivo)(2018) Novella, Rafael; Repetto Lisboa, Andrea; Robino, Carolina; Rucci, Graciana; Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID); Universidad de Oxford (Oxford Department of International Development & the Centre on Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance)Youth is a critical stage in people's lives: a transition period in which transcendental decisions have to be made in many areas, especially in education and work. Knowing what lies behind the choice between studying and working, or the combination of both, allows to assist, through the formulation of public policies, those who seek to ensure a better future for the next generation of workers in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). ). This objective is a priority due to changes in the labor market, marked by the emergence of new technological advances that threaten to automate tasks and occupations.

- ItemNonlinear time-series forecasts for decision support: short-termdemand for ICU beds in Santiago, Chile, during the 2021COVID-19 pandemic(2022) Quiroga Gómez, Bernardo Francisco; Vásquez, Cristián; Vicuña Loyola, María IgnaciaIn Chile, due to the explosive increase of new Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases during the first part of 2021, the ability of health services to accommodate new incoming cases was jeopardized. It has become necessary to be able to manage intensive care unit (ICU) capacity, and for this purpose, monitoring both the evolution of new cases and the demand for ICU beds has become urgent. This paper presents short-term forecast models for the number of new cases and the number of COVID-19 patients admitted to ICUs in the Metropolitan Region in Chile.

- ItemPowering Up productivity: the effects of electrification on U.S. manufacturingFiszbein, Martin ; Lafortune, Jeanne; Lewis, Ethan G.; Tessada, JoséWe use 1890-1940 sector-county level data to identify the impact of electricity on manufacturing industries, exploiting pre-electrification variation in energy intensity across industries combined with variation across locations in proximity to early hydroelectric power plants. We find that labor productivity gains from electricity were rapid and long-lasting, in contrast with established narratives. Electrification was quickly accompanied by capital deepening and organizational changes that may have contributed to these gains. Impacts varied with market structure: productivity increased without expanding employment in sector-county cells with large initial firm size, while, in contrast, both output and employment increased in cells with small initial firm size.

The host galaxy appears to be PGC 67413 = ESO 145-G16. Joseph Brimacombe, Cairns, Australia, reports that ten stacked 600-s CCD images (limiting magnitude 20) taken remotely with a 32-cm RCOS telescope (+ STL6K camera + clear filter) at the Macedon Ranges Observatory near Melbourne, Australia, on Aug. 29.727 show the new object to be at mag 18.3 and located approximately 7" west and 7" south of the presumed host-galaxy nucleus. Another stacked image (seven 1200-s frames; limiting magnitude 20), taken by Brimacombe on Sept. 2.636 with a 40-cm RCOS telescope (+ U16 camera + red filter) at the Coral Towers Observatory (Cairns), yields mag 18.6 for 2010hj; the Sept. 2 stacked image has been posted at the following website URL: http://www.flickr.com/photos/43846774@N02/4952444311/....

They note that the new object lies 5".4 east and 1".1 north from a galaxy seen in Sloan Digital Sky Survey images with measured redshift z = 0.109; the current luminosity of 2010iw appears too high for it to be a regular supernova associated with this distant galaxy. The host galaxy is thus is likely to be UGC 4570 (at redshift z = 0.0215)....
